da bet nacional: According to reports in The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld has urged the club to hand him an improved contract as he is wanted by eight top clubs.
What’s the word, then?
da luck: Well, The Sun says that Spurs have yet to offer the 28-year-old a new contract with his current deal due to run out in 2020, despite approaches by his father Vic and fellow advisor Stijn Francis.
Mauricio Pochettino recently added more competition to his backline following the arrival of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax, although Kevin Wimmer left to join Stoke City.
Francis believes that Alderweireld, who has established himself as one of the best in his position in the Premier League over the course of the last three seasons, deserves more money or to be sold on to one of the many interested clubs.
What did Francis say?
According to The Sun, Alderweireld’s advisor said: “When you look at Toby’s statistics, they are impressive. Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.
“Seven or eight big European clubs are interested in signing him.
“There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can.
“But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy.”
Who could some of the clubs be?
Looking at the Premier League, it would certainly be no surprise if both Manchester clubs and Chelsea were interested in the Belgian, while Arsenal would probably also be keen on the 28-year-old if he was willing to make the controversial move across north London.
Overseas, Barcelona and Real Madrid could also be potential destinations for Alderweireld, while the two Milan clubs and Juventus could also be keen.
What happens next?
It will be interesting to see.
The Times reported earlier this year that talks had stalled with the player demanding a release clause be inserted into any new deal.
Levy is also known to have a strict limit when it comes to player wages and it is likely that Alderweireld will believe that he should be earning more than that cap when he sees how much other stars are earning at different clubs.
