The former Sligo Rovers man has turned out to be an excellent asset for Everton during his time at the club, yet with top quality full-backs currently somewhat of a rarity within the Premier League at this time, it seems the relationship between Coleman and Roberto Martinez’s club looks set to be tested this summer…
None other than Manchester United have reportedly raised an interest in landing the Irishman, and as the Red Devils are certainly used to meeting inflated transfer fees set by their rivals on a regular basis, perhaps the flying full-back will soon be on his way to Old Trafford, whether or not the Goodison Park faithful agree with the move.
So then, will this turn out to be just another waste of money from United in the transfer market, or is Seamus Coleman actually an ideal candidate for Louis van Gaal in the run up to the 2015/16 campaign?
Well, this potential move is bound to raise certain question marks one way or another. Put simply, Everton’s Coleman just isn’t the of the high-profile calibre Manchester United fans have come to expect. The 26-year-old won’t raise £millions in shirt sales behind the scenes at Old Trafford, for he ultimately doesn’t command the would-be Galacticos status the Red Devils have been striving for of late.
Coleman equally isn’t versed in the testing routine of having to make the top four every season, hasn’t won any silverware whilst representing the Toffees and also remains an unexperienced figure when it comes to doing the business in the Champions League.
The quick-footed Irishman therefore represents somewhat of a gamble for Louis van Gaal in the transfer market. He could well go down as just another Manchester United defender who failed to make the grade at Old Trafford if not given the full backing of his manager and the fans.
However, for a not to be sniffed at fee of around £15 million, this is a move that the Red Devils really shouldn’t pass up easily. They may be issuing Everton with a massive profit on the star should the club eventually meet the aforementioned transfer fee on Coleman’s head, but it would certainly be a worthwhile deal for LVG, if the Dutchman does see it over the line.
Seamus Coleman may not be a world beater by any means, yet as he will likely prove a far shot better than the likes of Antonio Valencia, Rafael and even Phil Jones in the right back position for Manchester United, the Irishman would nonetheless represent a superior option for the Red Devils going into the new season.
His potential arrival may also allow Daley Blind to operate in his usual midfield position, and would most definitely signal a far better deal than last summer’s ridiculous decision to bring the unproven Luke Shaw to Old Trafford for over £30 million.
The current Goodison Park favourite, whilst still admittedly going down as a bit of a risk for Manchester United, therefore ultimately offers an improvement for Van Gaal’s squad, as well as someone who wouldn’t break the bank as a consequence of his possible arrival.
Yes, the likes of Dani Alves, Danilo, and maybe even Philipp Lahm still, all represent better, experienced and more well-rounded prospects that would arguably satisfy the Old Trafford faithful a great deal more than Everton’s first choice right-back ever could – albeit actually getting them would be harder
Yet because the Manchester United defence simply needs all the help it can get at the moment, the chance of signing Seamus Coleman should nonetheless be given real consideration by the Red Devils chairmen this summer.
