A better alternative for the Toffees might be Smalling’s United team-mate Daley Blind. The Dutchman is more versatile and much better on the ball than the Englishman.
Blind could play at centre-half alongside Michael Keane and bring the ball out of defence, but would also be able cover for Leighton Baines; maybe even taking over the left-back reigns long-term from the Liverpudlian.
