da imperador bet: According to reports in The Mirror, Manchester United are considering breaking their transfer record by making a huge £100m summer swoop for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.
What’s the word, then?
da spicy bet: Well, The Mirror says that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho wants to make the Italy international his marquee signings at Old Trafford, as he looks to rebuild his midfield.
The Mirror says that the Portuguese boss was quoted £100m for the 25-year-old when he tried to bring him to Manchester from the Ligue 1 giants last summer, and it would take a similar fee now to have any chance of prising him away from the French club.
The report adds that should Mourinho get his way, Verratti would partner prospective signing Fred in a new-look midfield that would push either Nemanja Matic or Paul Pogba – or potentially both depending on what formation United are playing – out of the starting XI, which may not please the fans, who have delivered their verdict on a potential move for a Portugal international, with one describing him as “worse than Rashford”.
How did Verratti do this season?
The Italian was once again a key figure for PSG as they won the Ligue 1 title, and he ended the 2017/18 campaign with two goals and seven assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.
The tenacious 25-year-old is known for his dribbling, passing and his ability to find that key ball in the final third, but he is also useful from a defensive point of view as well as he loves loves a tackle and an interception.
Would he be a good signing for United?
He certainly would be.
The Italy international has shown time and time again the quality he has, and in many ways he is an all-round midfielder that offers similar attributes to N’Golo Kante at Chelsea because of how effective he can be at both ends of the pitch, although he is perhaps a level ahead and can be more effective than the Frenchman in the Premier League because of what he can do in the final third.
Verratti is a player that can dictate the play and find that key pass, and that is certainly needed at Old Trafford given they struggled to entertain the Old Trafford faithful on many occasions during the 2017/18 season.
Obviously if the reports are true United would need to break their transfer record to get him, and it will be interesting to see whether Ed Woodward and Mourinho are willing to do that.
